YN CHRUINNAGHT 2009 : 11 - 19 July 2009

Yn Chruinnaght is very grateful to the Isle of Man Arts Council and to the Manx Heritage Foundation for their financial support.

Another successful educational Outreach!

With grateful thanks to the Department of Education for financial support, Yn Chruinnaght again organised a series of schools' visits by performers of traditional music during the week 15th-19th June.

The four-member group Oirghialla met in Dundalk, County Louth - hometown of another of this year's guest artists, Nuala Kennedy - through Dundalk Institute of Technology’s B.A. (Hons) in Applied Music four-year degree course. With two members of the group in the third year, and two in the first, this group of four started concentrating on playing together at the beginning of this year through similar passions for Irish traditional music.

Fresh New Music! - A Tribute to Colin Jerry

On Monday 13th July, an event will be held at the Freemasons' Hall in Ramsey as a tribute to Colin Jerry, whose death on Friday 19th December 2008 brought the loss of a good friend to the Isle of Man and its culture. Colin devoted a lot of time, a great deal of effort and his huge reservoir of skills to promoting the Island's traditional music and language.

Without Colin's work, there would not have been the numbers of young people coming through Yn Chruinnaght and going on to perform and develop Manx traditional music.

Colin's work has been, and will continue to be, of huge importance to the Island, and we are deeply indebted to him for his great legacy.

Over the years, Yn Chruinnaght competitions have included classes for a new song written in Manx and for a new tune, as well as new arrangements of traditional material.

In 2009 it has been decided to put competitions aside and focus on new music, with writers and performers welcome to present fresh new material as part of this tribute to Colin.

The evening will also see the launch of Kiaull yn Theay 3, a collection of Manx songs and tunes that have been composed in recent years, which will complement Colin's original Kiaull yn Theay and Kiaull yn Theay 2 which bring together tunes from traditional sources.
