The Brim is a Cornish duo which combines the guitar playing of Jamie Toms with the accordion sound of Alan Pengelly. They met through the Cornish music and dance scene in sessions and concerts and supporting several different dance groups throughout Cornwall. They play an eclectic mix of both contemporary and traditional Cornish music, including their own compositions, along with Celtic/folk music from regions outside of Cornwall. Alan and Jamie have built upon their distinct compatibility, drive and ambition as a duo to help develop and establish a new and dynamic sound, drawing upon elements of folk, jazz and other genres.
The Brim have performed at a number of festivals, including Cwlwm Celtaidd, Shennaghys Jiu, the Pan Celtic Festival (Ireland) and Festival Interceltique de Lorient.
The Brim’s third member is their caller, Julian Whiting, at the helm to steer people through dances in a fun and friendly style. Julian and Alan were two of the original members of Cornish music and dance group ‘Asteveryn’, 1998-2010, and have worked together at a number of festivals and events, throughout Cornwall and elsewhere.
